NEPHROTOXICITY INDUCED BY CADMIUM CHLORIDE CAN BE BLOCKED BY FLAVONOID QUERCETIN

      Cadmium is a heavy metal, which is widely used in industry, affecting human health through occupational and environmental exposure. In mammals, it exerts multiple toxic effects and has been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The multiple mechanisms of cadmium-induced toxicity and carcinogenicity are proposed, Cadmium is also known as a toxic agent to renal tubular cells and glomeruli as reflected by impairment of renal tubular and glomerular function. In this study, we have investigated the protective effect of quercetin in rat renal toxicity induced by cadmium chloride. We have applied a histopathologic method and erythrocyte osmotic fragility test as endpoints of our study. Male Wistar rats were given cadmium chloride by gavage at 10, 20, 30 and 72 mg/kg in single doses. We found that there were losses in the visceral layer of Bowman's capsule and the collecting tubules were slightly damaged in cadmium chloride-exposed rats in a dose-dependent manner but the pre-treated rats with flavonoid quercetin at 100 mg/kg for 1 hour prior to treatment with cadmium chloride reduced these toxic effects. From this study, quercetin may work as antioxidant and/or cell-signaling modifier.
